What are chemical peels?

Chemical peels are non-surgical skin resurfacing treatments that rejuvenate your skin by removing the outermost damaged layers. This reveals fresher, healthier skin underneath while stimulating new cell growth and collagen formation.

The treatment involves applying a carefully selected solution to your face, which gently removes dead cells and encourages your skin to regenerate. After treatment, your skin will feel more tender initially, but no significant downtime is required.

Chemical peels are one of the most versatile and popular skin transforming procedures available, providing remarkable skin confidence to people of all ages and skin types. They’re truly an all-rounder in professional skincare.

What skin concerns can chemical peels address?

Chemical peels are incredibly effective for multiple skin concerns, making them one of the most comprehensive treatments available.

Age-related concerns:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage and photoaging
  • Rough or uneven skin texture
  • Dull complexion and uneven skin tone

Skin clarity issues:

  • Acne and acne marks
  • Mild scarring and textural irregularities
  • Clogged pores and blackheads
  • Overall skin congestion

Pigmentation problems:

  • Melasma and hormonal pigmentation
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Age spots and sun spots

Each peel is customized to target your specific concerns and skin type for optimal results.

What are the benefits of chemical peels?

Immediate improvements:

  • Encourages healthy collagen and elastin production
  • Boosts the efficiency of your skincare products
  • Remarkably reduced blemishes and clearer skin
  • Visibly improved signs of aging

Long-term advantages:

  • Keeps fine lines and wrinkles at bay through regular treatments
  • Creates more even skin tone and refined texture
  • Provides a fresh start for any skin type
  • Builds a foundation for better overall skin health

Chemical peels offer comprehensive skin renewal that addresses multiple concerns simultaneously while supporting your skin’s natural renewal processes.

Are there any side effects?

The depth of the peel determines both the results and potential side effects. Superficial peels (which we primarily use) are generally safe and effective with minimal risks when performed by experienced practitioners.

Common temporary effects:

  • Mild discomfort for a few hours post-treatment
  • Skin redness lasting a few days to potentially a month, depending on peel depth
  • Possible mild swelling for up to 3 days (more common with deeper peels)
  • Slight itchiness during the healing process
  • Temporary changes in pigmentation that typically resolve

Following pre and post-peel instructions carefully minimizes risks and optimizes your results.

    Do chemical peels hurt?

Chemical peels may cause some stinging sensation during application, but this is typically brief and manageable. The discomfort is generally not severe or long-lasting.

You may experience some redness, itching, or flaking afterward, but these effects subside as your skin heals and reveals its refreshed appearance.

How often can I have a chemical peel?

Depending on the type of peel and your skin’s needs, treatments can be performed once or twice monthly. This will be discussed and personalized during your consultation based on your skin type and goals.

How soon after a chemical peel can I use retinol or other active skincares?

Your skin is in the middle of the healing process after an intense chemical peel so it is advised to stay away from retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, and other chemical exfoliants until your skin is healed and able to tolerate this. This is to avoid any possible disruption in the healing process.

    Pre/Post Care

    Before your chemical peel:

    • Avoid tanning beds and limit sun exposure for at least two weeks beforehand
    • Stop using retinoids/tretinoin 1-2 weeks prior to treatment
    • Men should avoid shaving on the treatment day to prevent complications
    • Avoid hair removal procedures like electrolysis or depilatory creams for one week before
    • Stay well-hydrated, especially on your procedure day
    • Feel free to ask any questions — I’m here to guide you

    Post-treatment care

    Immediately after treatment:

    • Wear SPF 30+ sunscreen whenever outdoors (this is crucial)
    • Avoid picking or peeling small scabs or flaking skin to prevent scarring
    • Do not wear makeup for at least 24 hours
    • Avoid swimming for at least 24 hours
    • Avoid hot tubs, saunas, and steam baths until your skin has fully healed

    For 7-10 days post-treatment:

    • Avoid retinol/tretinoin, AHAs, BHAs, and any active skincare products
    • Skip other facial treatments for at least 2 weeks

You’ll receive a specially designed post-procedure kit with everything needed to support your skin’s healing and renewal process.

Following the untimely death of my mum I felt I had aged overnight. I went to Kim for some advice on how to “freshen” my face. She took time to explain the treatments she thought would give me the best results and between us we came up with a plan of subtle tweaks. I was a nervous patient but she put me at ease straight away. Kim is an expert in her field, highly professional yet personable and warm. I was utterly amazed at the results! Thank you for my “refresh” and for giving me so much of you and your time to achieve our goal x
