What are age spots?

Age spots are a form of pigmentation in the skin. Pigmentation can come in many forms – for example, as age spots or liver spots – and is a natural and very common skin condition. It appears as areas of darkened skin, which can affect any part of the body, but frequently occurs on prominent places like the face, neck and hands – making it a very unwanted skin condition! Melasma is another common type of pigmentation that is often seen during pregnancy and menopause.

Telangiectasias is a condition that causes tiny blood vessels to appear more visible with sun damage particularly on the face along with spots at the sites where melanocytes are destroyed.

Melanocytes are cells responsible for producing called melanin, a hormone which produces colouration on the skin. Those pigmented areas worsen and cause freckles, age spots, liver spots and even white spots where melanocytes are destroyed.

What causes pigmentation?

Pigmentation is caused by excess production of melanin in the skin, which in turn can be caused by many things – including sun damage, scarring from acne, hormones and just the simple side effects of ageing.

Following the untimely death of my mum I felt I had aged overnight. I went to Kim for some advice on how to “freshen” my face. She took time to explain the treatments she thought would give me the best results and between us we came up with a plan of subtle tweaks. I was a nervous patient but she put me at ease straight away. Kim is an expert in her field, highly professional yet personable and warm. I was utterly amazed at the results! Thank you for my “refresh” and for giving me so much of you and your time to achieve our goal x
